Gut Feeling or Fear? How to Tell the Difference

By Soul Essence, New Eltham, London, UK

Have you ever had a strong feeling that something was not quite right, but you could not explain why? Perhaps your stomach tightened, your thoughts became louder or you suddenly felt the need to step back.

Was it your gut feeling speaking, or was it fear?

Learning to understand the difference between intuition and fear can help you become more self-aware and make decisions with greater clarity. While neither feeling should automatically be treated as fact, both can offer useful information about what is happening within you.

What Is a Gut Feeling?

A gut feeling is a quick sense or impression that appears without conscious reasoning. It can feel like a quiet inner knowing, a physical sensation or a strong sense that you should pay attention.

Your brain is constantly processing information, including details you may not consciously notice. Past experiences, patterns and subtle signals can all contribute to an intuitive response.

You might think:

“I cannot explain it, but something feels different.”

A gut feeling does not always mean that something is wrong. It may simply encourage you to pause, look more closely or consider another option.

What Does Fear Feel Like?

Fear is a natural response designed to help us recognise potential danger. It can be useful, but it can also become activated when there is no immediate threat.

Fear may bring:

  • Racing thoughts
  • A sense of urgency
  • Physical tension
  • Repeated “what if?” questions
  • Worry about future outcomes
  • A strong desire to escape or avoid something

When fear takes over, the mind can create many possible negative scenarios. This can make it difficult to hear quieter forms of inner awareness.

Intuition or Anxiety?

One common question is how to tell intuition from anxiety.

There is no single test that can always provide the answer. However, paying attention to the quality of your experience can be helpful.

Anxiety often feels noisy and repetitive. It may keep returning to the same worry and demand certainty.

Intuition can sometimes feel quieter and more direct. It might simply give you a sense that you need to pause, ask a question or pay attention.

For example, anxiety might say:

“What if everything goes wrong?”

A gut feeling might say:

“Something here needs a closer look.”

Neither should be ignored or automatically obeyed. Instead, become curious about the message behind the feeling.

Listen to Your Body

Your body can provide useful clues about your emotional state.

Notice whether you are breathing quickly, holding tension in your shoulders, clenching your jaw or experiencing a tight stomach.

Then pause.

Take several slow breaths and give yourself some space before deciding what the sensation means.

Ask:

“What am I feeling, and what might have caused it?”

Sometimes the answer will be obvious. Other times, it may take time.

Check the Facts

Developing self-trust does not mean believing every feeling without question.

If something concerns you, look at the evidence. Ask questions. Consider other explanations. Speak to someone you trust when appropriate.

Intuition can be one source of information, but it works best alongside thoughtful reflection and practical evidence.

Journalling Prompt

Find a quiet place and write about a time when you experienced a strong gut feeling.

Ask yourself:

“Was I experiencing intuition, fear, anxiety or a mixture of these feelings?”

Write down what you noticed in your body, the thoughts that appeared and what happened afterwards.

Then reflect:

“What have I learned about the way my own intuition and fear feel?”

With practice, you may begin to recognise your personal patterns more clearly.

The aim is not to silence fear or follow every gut feeling. It is to become a better listener — able to pause, notice, question and choose your response with greater awareness.

Spiritual Laws – Law of Discernment

There are thirty six or more spiritual laws that offer excellent ways for us to understand life on earth, some of the following text has been taken from Diana Cooper’s fantastic book “A Little Light on the Spiritual Laws”. I will briefly explain each law over the coming weeks, if you find this interesting I would encourage you to read Diana’s book. I use Diana’s book when I am low or want an answer to a problem I flick through the book and open it at a law, and more often than not that is where I need to focus at that time.

The Law of Discrimination

As adults, we are expected to know right from wrong. Throughout our lives, we are tested. When we are offered jobs, given guidance, meet people, we should check internally if it feels right.

At a deep level we know everything, our gut feelings let us know if someone is being honest or not if we care to listen. We often disregard this because our logical minds argue against it or we don’t want to believe it. This is overriding our intuition or gut feelings. If we do not discern we bear the resultant karma. Then we are tested again later in our lives.

To discriminate against someone on the grounds of sex, race or colour, is not spiritual. We should use discernment; ask ourselves does that person’s energy feel right as a friend or therapist? Is it comfortable to have a date with that person? We have the right to decide who we want in our life, it is discernment, not judgement when we follow our intuition.

None of us can know the whole truth while in a body. Only the creator knows that, but we should stay open and let our intuition guide us.

Quotes from Diana Cooper’s A Little Light on the Spiritual Laws

“Listen to your intuition and trust it to guide you.”

Understanding these laws can help us create a happy and joyous life, energy healing can also help us to follow these laws to create wealth and prosperity in our lives, by helping to remove anger, negative beliefs etc..
