Intuition Explained: What Is Your Inner Knowing Trying to Tell You?

By Soul Essence, New Eltham, London, UK

Have you ever had a strong feeling about something without knowing exactly why? Perhaps you met someone and immediately felt that you could trust them. Or maybe you had a quiet sense that you should wait before making an important decision.

This experience is often called intuition or inner knowing.

Intuition can feel mysterious, but it is a natural part of being human. Learning to understand your intuition can help you become more self-aware, recognise your feelings and pay attention to information you may not consciously notice.

What Is Intuition?

Intuition is an immediate understanding or feeling that happens without deliberate, conscious reasoning.

Your brain is constantly taking in information from your surroundings. It notices patterns, remembers previous experiences and responds to subtle changes, often without you being aware of the process.

The result can sometimes appear as a sudden feeling or thought.

You might simply think:

“Something doesn’t feel right.”

Or:

“I don’t know why, but this feels like the right direction.”

This is sometimes described as gut instinct, inner guidance or intuitive knowing.

How Does Inner Knowing Work?

Your intuition can communicate in different ways. For some people, it appears as a physical sensation. For others, it may be a recurring thought, sudden clarity or quiet feeling.

You might notice:

  • A feeling of calm when something feels right
  • Tension or discomfort when something feels wrong
  • A thought that repeatedly returns
  • A sudden sense of clarity
  • A feeling that you need to pause
  • An unexpected idea or insight
  • A strong awareness of another person’s mood

These signals can be subtle, particularly when life is busy.

Intuition and the Body

The body can be an important part of intuitive awareness.

You may notice your breathing change, your stomach tighten or your shoulders relax. You might experience a feeling of openness, heaviness, warmth or unease.

These sensations are worth noticing, but they are not automatically proof that your intuition is correct. Stress, anxiety and past experiences can create similar physical reactions.

Instead of immediately interpreting a sensation, try asking:

“What am I noticing, and what might be influencing this feeling?”

This creates space between the feeling and your response.

Intuition or Anxiety?

Understanding the difference between intuition and anxiety can take practice.

Anxiety often creates repetitive thoughts, fear and a sense of urgency. It may keep asking, “What if something goes wrong?”

Intuition can sometimes feel quieter and simpler. It may draw your attention to something without producing a long chain of fearful thoughts.

However, there is no perfect formula for telling them apart. Your feelings can be influenced by many things.

For important decisions, use intuition alongside evidence, facts, experience and careful thought.

How to Strengthen Your Intuition

You can develop your intuitive skills by paying attention to your inner world.

Make time for quiet. Take a walk without your phone. Sit somewhere peaceful. Practise mindfulness or spend a few minutes noticing your breathing.

Keeping an intuition journal can also help. Write down strong feelings or sudden insights and record what happened afterwards. Over time, you may recognise patterns in the way your intuition communicates.

The goal is not to follow every feeling.

It is to become better at listening.

Reflection Prompt

Take a few quiet minutes and reflect on this question:

“What is my inner knowing trying to bring to my attention right now?”

Write whatever comes to mind without editing or judging it.

Then ask yourself:

“Is there something I already know, but have been avoiding, questioning or overlooking?”

You do not need to make an immediate decision.

Sometimes intuition does not give us a complete answer. Instead, it offers a small nudge — an invitation to pause, look more closely and listen within.

Your inner knowing may be quiet, but with patience and awareness, you can learn its language.
